THE PREGNANCY WORKSHOP


To be taken between the first trimester and second trimester. March of Dimes has developed and Early Pregnancy class designed for both first time and experienced mothers and their parents. This national program, taught by trained maternity nurses is designed to promote optimum and newborn outcomes.


  • Learn about your developing baby and the physical and emotional changes that mom will experience.
  • Hints about the developing baby, nutrition, exercise and preparing for the new arrival.
  • Learn ways to deal with pregnancy discomforts and warning signs to report your health care provider.

Your pregnancy will be much more enjoyable if you know what to expect. And The Maternity Place staff would like to meet you!

THE BABY "B's" CLASS


To be taken after the first trimester.
The two most popular classes – Babycare and Breastfeeding – have combined into a two-part course.


Feel free to sign up for just one part, but we hope you’ll take both! 

Part 1: Breastfeeding
Join us for Part 2 to learn about the “other” Baby B—Breastfeeding:
The Art and Advantages 

Topics include:getting started, feeding techniques, position and timing, collecting and storing breast milk, and establishing a good milk supply.

Part 2: Babycare

  • Find out about the Baby "B’s" - bathing, bundling, burping, and bottles — and much more!
  • Learn to care for yourself and your newborn. Topics include: safety, circumcision, when to call the doctor, the difference between the baby blues and postpartum depression, and more.
Free • Held Saturday or Sunday afternoon.


PREPARED CHILDBIRTH CLASSES 


What is labor exactly? How can I stay as comfortable as possible?

Find out in this course designed to be taken near the seventh month of your pregnancy.
Topics include: relaxation and pain control options for labor, how to stay comfortable and healthy during those last weeks, stress reducing techniques and a tour of The Maternity Place. Find out how to make your experience enjoyable and satisfying.


This course is offered as a four-week course or
one eight-hour day course.
$35 Registration Fee


TEEN CHILDBIRTH CLASSES


Childbirth class designed for the pregnant teen and her support people.

Offered in four evening classes.


Free for the teen mom
Same content as adult Childbirth Classes


INFANT/CHILD HEARTSAVER CLASS 


The course is designed for the expectant parents, but is open to anyone wishing to learn these techniques.

  • Teaches CPR and how to help a choking infant or child
  • Offers tips to make your child’s environment as safe as possible
  • One four-hour class

The certificate course is free.
Cost is $3 to obtain a card. 
Enrollment is limited, so call early!


BREASTFEEDING-BEYOND THE BASICS


A discussion for moms two or more weeks after delivery. 

  • Learn about growth spurts, sibling rivalry and overcoming obstacles
  • Pumping and storage of milk is covered as well as adding solid foods and weaning
  • Tips for returning to work or school and choosing a daycare provider

BREAST FEEDING MOMS’ SUPPORT GROUP


Meets every Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Education Room at The Maternity Place at Samaritan Medical Center. New members are always welcome and attendance is on a drop-in basis. Each week certified lactation consultants are available to answer questions about breastfeeding and nutrition and to offer other services, such as weekly weigh-ins for newborns. There is no fee to belong to the group. For more information, please call The Maternity Place at 785-4050.




HEARTSAVER CPR CLASS


Offered on demand for groups of 6-12 participants. A variety of classes are available to individuals who have a desire to learn how to handle emergency situations. An American Heart Association class. For more information call Gwen Fillhart at 785-4575.




BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS CLASS


Offered monthly. This class is intended for healthcare personnel who are required to have credentials documenting successful completion of a CPR course. An American Heart Association class. For more information call Gwen Fillhart at 785-4575.




ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT CLASS


Offered monthly. This class in intended for emergency and critical care healthcare providers who are responsible for responding to cardiovascular emergencies in adults. An American Heart Association class. For more information call Gwen Fillhart at 785-4575.




PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT CLASS


Offered monthly. This class is intended for emergency and critical care healthcare providers who are responsible for responding to emergencies in infants and children. An American Heart Association class. For more information call Gwen Fillhart at 785-4575.
