New Vision

Samaritan Medical Center participates in many training programs, especially for area youth. The Jefferson-Lewis BOCES New Vision Health Careers program is very popular and helps influence high school youth interested in the healthcare field.

The program is designed for students with an interest in the medical profession, New Vision Health Careers is a hands-on learning experience guided by professionals in real-world settings. Not your typical high school program, New Vision Health Careers is an intensive one-year, honors-level course for focused students driven to succeed. Students work directly with and observe experienced healthcare professionals at a modern medical facility delivering quality care to patients. The program starts with four weeks of introductory class work after which students begin rotations at Samaritan Medical Center, and other local hospitals closest to the students.

New Vision students spend between one day and two weeks in each of the program's 57 hospital rotations interacting with patients, doctors, nurses, administrators and other professionals. Students see all aspects of the hospital operation, from emergency care and rehabilitation services to information technology and business management.

A student applying for New Vision Health Careers must be a senior who has:

  • An interest in the medical field
  • Demonstrated maturity to work independently and in teams
  • Completed three years of math and science
  • A strong attendance and academic record
  • Plans to attend college or other post-secondary education
  • Recommendations from a teacher and a community leader
