Pulmonary Rehabilitation

What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a personalized program that provides information and support to individuals living with a chronic lung disorder. It is appropriate for anyone whose chronic lung disorder is affecting the quality of his or her life. COPD/ Emphysema is the most frequent problem seen in Pulmonary Rehabilitation clients.

What is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is a disease that is the result of damaged lungs. Emphysema is a progressive disease that leads to the destruction of the air sacs that are the site of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Smoking is the most frequent cause of emphysema. Persons with Chronic Bronchitis suffer from frequent colds that “go straight to the lungs”. The bronchial tubes become swollen and inflamed which leads to lung infections. Left untreated these frequent lung infections can damage the airways.

What are the signs of COPD?

Symptoms vary from on individual to another. However, most people with COPD have experiences most of the following symptoms: Shortness of Breath after normal to light exertion, Lingering or constant cough, A history of lung problems, or a family member has been diagnosed with emphysema.

How Does Pulmonary Rehabilitation Help?

Participants in Pulmonary Rehabilitation help themselves by learning to take charge of their healthcare. Classes are lead by a team of health professionals who provide the participants with personalized information regarding the benefits of exercise, diet, medications and how to handle the day-to-day challenges of living with a chronic lung disorder. While there is no way to undo the damage of COPD, exercise can improve the way the body utilizes oxygen, thus decreasing fatigue. Exercise has also been shown to help alleviate depression. Because they have learned to manage their disease most Pulmonary Rehabilitation participants have fewer hospitalizations.

How Can I Participate?

You must currently be a non-smoker. If you still smoke and need help in quitting we offer smoking cessation counseling. You will need your doctor’s permission and a recent physical with a pulmonary function test. If the results of your pulmonary function test meet certain criteria Medicare and other insurance companies usually cover 80%-100% of the cost.
