Introduction
The
Osteopathic Internship Training Program at Samaritan
Medical Center was created in July 2000 and is fully
accredited by the American Osteopathic Association
(AOA) for six (6) Intern positions. The Program also
can be used to fulfill ACGME, PGY-I requirements,
making the choice of a follow-on residency much more
available and appealing. The Program has exceeded
all expectations by the AOA oversight bodies, the
schools, and most importantly, the students and has
evolved into a great platform to support Samaritan
Medical Center's Residency Programs.
Design
The
Osteopathic Internship Year is based on A.T. Still's
design and the most current AOA regulations. It requires
broad-based training to expand hands-on working knowledge
of all aspects of contemporary medicine and is flexible
enough to accommodate nearly all follow-on residency
training program needs. This type of hospital-based
training experience has successfully placed students
in all aspects of primary care, surgical care, and
such specialties as radiology, ophthalmology, dermatology,
aviation medicine, etc. It is an excellent experience
for you, the newly graduated physician, who may be
uncertain of your final career path. It gives you
sufficient time to choose wisely based on firsthand
experience derived from specific rotations.
Environment
Samaritan
Medical Center's environment is unique in that you
benefit from the one-on-one bedside teaching time
with attending physicians. In addition, there is a
wide range of didactic and hands-on educational opportunities
daily and weekly in the form of Grand Rounds, Primary
Care Conferences, specialty conferences, and informal
case reviews. You are required to spend time in the
OMT teaching lab each month in order to build upon
the OMT skills you have learned in medical school.
Resources
An
excellent textbook and electronic library is available
to you, and searches are encouraged. Professional
librarians are readily available to assist you with
any computer needs.
Excellence
Samaritan's
Internship Program fully celebrates its Osteopathic
heritage. It maximizes one-on-one training and OMT/OPP
instruction and prides itself on fully preparing you
for your wonderful future as a great Osteopathic doctor.
