Ambulatory (Outpatient) Surgery

The Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) admits and discharges one day and surgical day care (SDC) patients. Patients of all ages and complexity are provided service for General Surgery, Gynecology, Vascular, Urology, Plastic, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic and Podiatry. The primary focus of ASU is same day care patients, although inpatient surgery may be performed in ASU as well. The ASU also provides care to outpatients such as transfusions, infusions and recovery of interventional radiology patients and SDC patients who have had surgery in the Main OR.

The care provided to our patients is a multi-disciplinary approach that focuses on the patient and family. This includes pre operative teaching, anesthesia, surgery and post operative care.

The ASU staff consists of a Nurse Manager, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Technicians, RN’s, LPN’s, Central Schedulers, Unit Secretaries, and Nursing Assistants. ASU is located on the third floor of the Medical Office Building. The unit includes a reception area, waiting room, a five room pre op preparation area, three operating rooms, a five bed PACU I area and an eleven bed PACU II area. Central Scheduling is also a part of ASU and is located within the suite. Central Schedulers are responsible for booking all surgical procedures for Outpatient Procedures (OPP), ASU and the Main OR. Pre Admission Testing appointments are also scheduled through Central Scheduling.

Pre Admission Testing (PAT), is a part of ASU, and is located on the second floor of the Medical Office Building. Nurse Practitioners and a Physician Assistant, who practice under the direction of the Anesthesia Department, evaluate all patients who are having elective surgery to ensure that the patients are optimized for their surgical procedure.

Families play a key role in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit and are integrated into the patients pre operative and post operative care and teaching, from the time of PAT until discharge from ASU.

The hours of operation for the unit are 6am until 7:30pm excluding weekends and holidays. We perform around 300 surgeries per month, and provide care for all age groups from a few months old to patients in their 80’s and 90’s.

We have a friendly, experienced staff who are goal oriented to provide quality care in a fast paced environment. We offer our patients early ambulation; early reuniting with family members; and early discharge planning and teaching interventions which is started in PAT. These all contribute to decreasing the amount of time that the patient spends at the hospital the
day of surgery and increases the amount of patient satisfaction.
